Bottle Prep

Steps:
  1. Remove the label under hot water
  2. Use vegetable oil and cornstarch and coat the glue on the bottle (50% oil, 50% cornstarch) 
  3. Let the cornstarch and oil sit for 5 minutes
  4. Rinse off the cornstarch and oil with warm water

Fins Tutorial

Materials:
  1. Plastic Sleeve
  2. Fin material (foam board or plastic corrugated sheets)
  3. Fin Template
  4. Clear tape
  5. Scotch tape
  6. Super glue or hot glue
  7. Fin spacer 
Steps:
  1. Trace fins onto fin material
  2. Cut out the fins with an exacto knife
  3. Fine the fins with scotch tape
  4. Cut the sleeve in 1/2 and fit the sleeve to the pressure chamber. Use tape to connect the sleeve together
  5. Draw lines on the sleeve to space out the fins (90 degrees for 4 fins, 120 degrees for 3 fins)
  6. Place dots of super glue on the fin and attach to the sleeve. Hold the fin on the sleeve for 30 seconds
  7. Reinforce the fins with tape
  8. Repeat steps 6-7 for the other fins

Tommy Toy Nose Cone Tutorial

Materials:
  1. X1.5 2L soda bottles or smart water bottles
  2. Tommy toy timer
  3. Packing tape
  4. Scotch tape
  5. Reinforced packing tape
  6. Foam board or corrugated plastic sheets
  7. Gel Super Glue
  8. Elastic String
  9. Ping pong ball
  10. Zip ties
  11. Transparency Sheets
Steps:
  1. Cut the bottom off of the bottle
  2. Cut 2 circles out of foam board with the same diameter as the bottle
  3. Use a piece of paper as a stencil and trace the door onto your bottle. 
  4. Drill 4 holes in the corner of the door on the bottle. Use scissors to cut out the door.
  5. Trace the cut out door onto the second bottle. Cut out the new door so that is 0.5cm larger than the original door. 
  6. Insert the supports (circles) inside the nose cone with super glue or hot glue. 
  7. Attach a sleeve to the bottom of the nose cone that will fit over the pressure chamber. 
  8. Cut the nozzle off of the top of the nose cone. 
  9. Cut a ping pong ball and insert it on top of the nose cone
  10. Drill two holes into one of the supports inside the nose cone. Thread a rubber bad through the holes to hold the altimeter. 
  11. Extract the motor from the tommy toy. 
  12. Use pliers to remove the plastic handle off the tommy toy motor. 
  13. Use 2 pliers to bend the tommy toy shaft 90 degrees
  14. Attach the head of the zip tie to the shaft of the tommy toy
  15. Drill holes to zip tie the tommy toy to the nose cone
  16. Attach the tommy toy motor to the nose cone
  17. Dill another set of holes to hold the trigger mechanism
  18. Use transparency sheets and create a spring mechanism for the parachute
  19. Attach the spring mechanism to the nose cone
  20. Attach the door to the nose cone
  21. Dill 2 tiny holes and thread elastic spring in the holes and tie together.

Parachute Tutorial

Materials:
  1. Trash bag
  2. String
  3. Reinforced packing tape or duct tape
  4. Makeshift compass for drawing circles
  5. Scissors

​Steps:
  1. Cut a trash bag in ½ and lay flat on the floor
  2. Draw a circle on the trash bag then cut out
  3. Fold the circle in half, then in quarters, then in eighths. This marks where to put the string.
  4. Measure out 8 pieces of string that are twice the diameter of the parachute.
  5. Tie a knot at the end of each string
  6. Tape the knot side of the strings to the parachute
  7. Place a weight in the center of the parachute and pull tight then tie all the strings together
  8. Optional: cut a hole at the top of the parachute to increase stability

Splicing

Materials
  1. 2 or more bottles of the same diameter with smooth, straight sides
  2. Mineral Spirits
  3. PL Premium Construction Adhesive
  4. Duct Tape
  5. Water
  6. Paper Towels
  7. Newspaper or cardboard
  8. Scissors
  9. Rubber gloves
  10. 100 grit sandpaper
  11. Flat bottomed pan or skillet with a heat source (stove, microwave, etc.)
  12. 0.5 inch pvc pipe

Steps
  1. Cut the bottom off of two 2L soda bottles
  2. Heat a pot of water with 0.5 inch depth to 160 degrees
  3. Slide the female bottle onto a 0.5 inch pvc pipe
  4. Very quickly dip the male bottle in the water
  5. Check if the male bottle fits in the female bottle
  6. Repeat steps 4-5 until you get a very tight fit with the two bottles
  7. Sand the outside of the male bottle
  8. Sand the inside of the female bottle
  9. Use a popsicle stick and apply a layer of PL premium on the outside of the male bottle. (Do not get it on your hands)
  10. Apply a layer of PL premium on the inside of the female bottle. 
  11. On the 0.5 inch pvc pipe, slide the male bottle into the female bottle and push them firmly together.
  12. Adjust to make the the joint perfectly straight 
  13. Let the glue dry for 5 days
  14. Neatly apply a stip of duct tape over the joint
  15. Pressure test
