Course Syllabus
Mission
The mission of this course is to provide skills for students who are interested in recreating in the mountains to make safe decisions, and how to respond in emergency situations. This course does not provide any certifications, but is meant to build a foundation of knowledge for further education.
Course Overview
Part 1: Avalanche Rescue
In part 1 of this course we will start off with learning about snow science and avalanche rescue. Topics covered will be how to conduct an avalanche rescue start to finish with the use of beacon, shovel, and probe. How to access resources to make smart decisions before venturing into the mountains, and trip planning.
Part 2: Wilderness First Aid
In part 2 of this course the focus will be on basic wilderness first aid and how to treat common backcountry injuries. Students will learn how to assess patients and learn what to say when calling 911 in the backcountry.
Part 3: Personal on Rope Skills
In part 3 the purpose is to give students knowledge on rope skills. The focus will be on how to make anchors using rock protection and assess natural anchors as well. Students will learn how to repel, use pulley systems, belay, practice good site management, and respond to emergency situations in vertical terrain.

Grading
This will consist of three pass/fail scenarios which will demonstrate the skills and knowledge learned in this course. This will consist of 75% of the total grade in this course. If you fail a practicum you may have an opportunity to try again.
There will also be assignments throughout the course that will be worth points. This will be roughly 25% of your grade.

Responsibilities for Learning
- Attendance: If you miss class for any reason, let me know ahead of time, and check the google classroom for any work you have missed.
- Tardiness: You will be marked tardy if you are more than 5 minutes late.
- Extra Credit: There is no extra credit in my class.
- Late Work: All late work will receive a 20% deduction, and if it is more than a week late I will not take it. Late work is accepted only if there was an arrangement made prior to the assignment being due.
- How to turn in work: You can turn in work on google classroom or put assignments in the turn in box in the front of the room.
- Parent Communication Policy: You are all young adults, and as such, I ask that you the student take ownership of assignments and grades. Please do not have your parents contact me regarding your grades until you have asked the questions to me first, via email, speech, or writing. If you or your parents still have questions after you have talked to me, I would be happy to address your/their concerns at that point.
Materials for this Course
The only required materials for this course is a notebook, and the other materials will be provided. If you recreate in the mountains on your own time you should get the recommended safety gear for that activity.

Time and Expectations
- The course will take place at 2:30pm-3:30pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday during the spring semester.
- X-block field days class will be on Wednesdays 1:40pm-3:30pm (time may extend depending on activity). There will be 10 students from the regular elective with three instructors participating, and will occur during the 4th quarter this spring semester.
