Objective

Introduce 8 people in a circle POW and wrestle with the concept of probability. 

8 People in a Circle POW

Problem: Eight people are sitting in a circle. They all flip a coin at the same time, and one time only. Those who flip heads, stand up, and those who flip tails remain seated. 

Question: What is the probability that no two neighbors are standing after the flip?

Extension Question: Can you generalize a formula for N people?

8 people in a Circle POW Activity

1. (5 min) Have 8 people flip a coin and demonstrate how the problem works
2. (30 min) Split into small groups and wrestle with the problem
3. (10 min) Reconnect as a class and discuss findings
