Objectives

  • Understand finding the area of quadrilaterals and triangles
  • Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find missing sides of right triangles
  • Use Trig Ratios to find missing sides of right triangles (Soh Cah Toa)

Starter

Before the starter make sure everyone has measured the volume of their container. If you have not go to the front of the room and measure it.

In your table group discuss the following:
  1. Line up all the boxes from least volume to most volume. What are the properties of a box with a larger volume? 
  2. In what other ways could we measure efficiency?
  3. How would the order change if we valued another metric other than volume?

Biggest Box Activity

Unit Question: What makes shapes efficient?

Description: The main task for this activity is with a single sheet of construction paper, build a box with the largest amount of volume. Volume will be measured by how much rice krispies the box can hold. At the end of the activity we will line up the boxes to see which shapes hold the most and which shapes hold the least. 

Discussion:
  1. What shapes did you find to hold the most rice krispies and which ones held the least? Why? 
  2. In what other ways could we measure “the biggest” shape, and how would that be relevant to volume? 
  3. How could this activity be related to efficiency?

Homework

3-4-5 Triangle POW (Due Friday), Class supplies by end of the week.

  5. Regroup and synthesize at the end of class
